BARONESS - CAN THEY REACH THE PEAK OF MASTODON’S SUCCESS?

As far as metal bands go, Mastodon took the lead with their epic album “Leviathan.” They’ve reached new heights for a progressive metal band. Now comes Baroness with a sound slightly reminiscent of this band’s. Will they be able to duplicate Mastodon’s success?
There are many theories as to the origin of this band’s name but none of the members has publicly spoken about it. Baroness was actually formed way back in 2003 by ex-members of the band Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. John Dyer Baizley, vocalist and guitarist, is also a talented artist from Savannah, Georgia who has done the artwork for all Baroness albums. He has, in fact, also designed for other bands such as Darkest Hour, The Red Chord, Daughters, and Pig Destroyer. In his desire to create a great album he listened to music for as long as 12 hours a day and carefully analyzed the albums he considered to be truly classic. The result was the deeply personal and haunting Red Album. It was released in 2007 and was named Album of the Year by Revolver, the heavy metal magazine. They are presently on tour all over the United States.
